High
School in Australia (Ages 15-18)
Head “Down Under” for an academic year
or semester program and experience the laid-back Australian
lifestyle first-hand. Australia is blessed with unspoiled
natural surroundings and sunshine year round, so it
is the perfect destination for those who enjoy sports
and outdoor recreation. You will live with an Australian
host family and attend a local high school, giving
you the opportunity to experience the life of an Australian
teen first-hand.
School runs from February through December. Summer
months are December through March. Australian schools
typically require a uniform. Core subjects such as
math, science and English are required, but a smorgasbord
of courses is available for the elective subjects.
Australian schools are challenging and demanding;
expect to study and do your homework! Schools often
organize field trips during holidays. After school,
Australian teens spend a lot of time outdoors, and
joining a sporting club for fun or competition is
common. Teens also enjoy discos and going to movies.
You may find your host parents quite protective,
yet as long as you stay within family rules, your
host parents will be flexible. Most parents work outside
of the home; expect a busy, lively household where
mealtime is the chance to catch up with everyone’s
daily activities. Host family placements are made
throughout all states, typically near the coastal,
urban areas.
