This
small country bordering Germany is known best for
its coastal resorts, colorful tulip fields and the
picturesque canals of its famous capital, Amsterdam.
The Netherlands, or Holland, is not only one of the
smallest countries in the world it also has the highest
population density in the Western world, with 419
people per square kilometer. The population of approximately
15 million is rapidly increasing.
Sports are very popular among the
Dutch, especially soccer, tennis, field hockey, swimming,
basketball and badminton. Cycling is a popular form
of transportation in Holland among people of all ages.
Almost every Dutch person old enough to ride a bicycle
has one, and the streets of Amsterdam are filled with
them.
The Dutch like nothing more than
a bit of social warmth. They care about their friendships
and manage them carefully. The Dutch families tend
to be close-knit, and extended family members often
live near one another. Most families have only one
or two children, and often both parents work outside
the home.
High
School in the Netherlands
An academic semester or year program in Holland will
be the highlight of your high school years. You will
be delighted with the hospitable and welcoming Dutch.
Like most young people, you will have a bicycle provided
for your time in Holland, and will enjoy the independence
of your own wheels. Students often gather to cycle
to and from school and other social events together.
In addition to cycling, soccer is a very popular sport
in the Netherlands.
The language spoken in the Netherlands is Dutch,
and will be the language of instruction at your school.
Learning Dutch will be a special challenge, but the
effort will be well worth it, as you will become fluent
by the end of your program.

Previous knowledge of Dutch is helpful, but not required.
