Serene meadows, mystical fjords, thundering waterfalls, peaceful fishing villages: Norwegians are justifiably proud of their pristine natural landscape, and a rugged, wilderness mentality is an integral part of their national identity. Almost 70% of the land area is covered with mountains, lakes and rivers, and dense forests of birch, pine, and oak. Known as “The Land of the Midnight Sun,” Norway draws adventure seekers who come to witness the spectacular aurora borealis (northern lights), and set foot in the world’s northernmost town, Hammerfest, nestled along the North Cape.
Norway’s charming folk traditions have endured the centuries. Virtually every Norwegian can recite for you the legends of fairies and trolls they learned in childhood, while traditional folk costumes often show up at formal events such as weddings. Despite strong ties to the past, Norway is a very modern country and every bit as technologically advanced as other European nations. Norwegians maintain a high standard of living, enjoying the highest per capita income in the world and a comprehensive social welfare system.
